BALM - Version 1.0, November 2001. EMail has lately become one of the main deployment method for viruses of different kinds. Many (but not all) of those viruses come as a file attached to an email message. The current version of the popular Outlook Express (ver 6 and above) email client, has a new important feature that can block attached files from been executed by mistake. Therefore it is highly recommended for Outlook Express users to upgrade to this version, AND TO ENABLE THIS OPTION WHICH IS DISABLED BY DEFAULT. However, Outlook Express 6 has no easy management of which file types to block or allow. This is why I wrote BALM to help myself and you controlling this protection. So, this is how you can better protect your computer from email viruses: 1) First are some general rules: You should have a good backup procedure, so you can recover data in case... You should have a working and updated anti-virus program. Always think twice before opening an email attachment. 2) Download and install the latest Internet Explorer 6 + Outlook Express 6. 3) Set the Security options in Outlook Express as shown in the picture below. 4) Use BALM or "Folder Options" if you wish to Allow or Block specific file types. 5) Update your programs like Internet Explorer and MSOffice for patches to security problems. BALM is FreeWare - you can use and copy to others. BALM is provided AS IS - No warranty of any kind. BALM is part of my free utility set called NUTS. Internet Explorer and Outlook Express are registered trade marks by Microsoft Corporation.
